Wrapped mummy of a small girl in a rectangular coffin from the Fayum, dating from the Ptolemaic period. The bandaged body has a cartonnage painted and gilded funerary mask over the head and shoulders. The female child was between 4 and 8 at death - the baby teeth are grown, with the second teeth also present in the jaw. Radiodense lines in the femurs indicate periods of arrested growth which could be caused by illness - and this explains the diminutive size of the body. The vertebral bones are missing from the 5th, 6th and 7th thoracic vertebrae and it is likely that she had an infection of the spine such as tuberculosis and the embalmers removed the abscess during mummification.
