Alabaster
canopic jar of Neb from Abydos, D9 tomb group. Neb was the overseer of cattle of Onuris (Onuris was a
huntsman god of the Abydos area). This is one of four jars which would
have held his internal organs - this one would have had a baboon lid and held
his lungs. The inscription is a prayer of protection for the jar by
Nephthys, the patron goddess of the baboon-headed deity and protector of the
lungs, Hapy.
The hieroglyphic text on the canopic jar says "Recitation by Nephthys: I embrace in my arms that
which is within me, I protect Hapy who is within me, the honoured by Hapy, the
Osiris, priest, overseer of cattle of Onuris, Neb, true of voice."
