The Museum hold the collection of Phoebe Apperson Hearst (1842-1919) who married George Hearst the Mining entrepreneur. When George died (1891) she turned to a life of philanthropy within the field of Education including Archaeology. The current Museum is houses at Berkley (see Picture-1) replaced the "tin shack". The Shack (see Picture-2) was built in 1902 and housed the Department of Anthropology until 1952.
