The Museum hold the collection of Phoebe Apperson Hearst (1842-1919) who married George Hearst the Mining entrepreneur. When George died (1891) she turned to a life of philanthropy within the field of Education including Archaeology.

The current Museum is houses at Berkley (see Picture-1) replaced the "tin shack". The Shack (see Picture-2) was built in 1902 and housed the Department of Anthropology until 1952. The first Museum of Anthropology was located at the Affiliated Colleges on Parnassus Heights in San Francisco (see Picture-3).
