Painted limestone stela depicting Apa Dorotheus 8th century AD, Apa Jeremias monastery, Saqqara Stelae, typically used as gravestones, could also commemorate church figures, such as saints or bishops. Dorotheus, identified by the inscription, is shown at prayer, above a cross surrounded by foliage. Such large monuments were dedicated in monasteries by the devout.
