The Middleham Jewel. Portrait of Richard III wearing the jewel which is one of the finest pieces of Gothic jewellery in Britain. It was found in 1985 alongside a footpath between Jervaulx and Coverham Abbeys. It was purchased for £2.5m in 1991. The diamond shaped pendant has a large oblong sapphire on the front with an engraving of the Trinity amidst foliage. On the border is engraved "Ecce agnus dei qui tollis peccata mundi miserere nobis" - 'Behold the Lamb of God has taken away the sins of the world'. This is followed by a magical formula against the falling sickness, epilepsy. On the reverse is a scene of the nativity and fifteen saints.
