The Horn of Ulf, York Minster. Carved from an elephant's tusk in Salerno in the 11th century and donated by the nobleman Ulf before the Norman conquest as part of a gift of extensive estates to the Minster. The silver mount and chain was added in 1675 by Thomas Mangy. There is a mention in the Doomsday Book of a gift of lands to York Minster by the Anglo-Scandinavian Ulf. The lands were probably given after 1066 to protect them from confiscation by the newly arrived Normans. The Minster regards Ulf as one of its most important patrons.
