Aira Force is one of the most popular starting points for exploration of the north-west shore of Ullswater and the adjacent fells. A network of paths leads from the car park through attractive woodland and along Aira Beck to the waterfalls. Paths to the east lead through an ancient deer park to the open fells and give access to much more strenuous routes over Gowbarrow Fell. At the foot of the falls is a bridge with a dedication to Cecil Spring Rice, Poet and Privy Councillor. He was ambassador to the United States during the 1st World War (Great War). He was born in London in 1859 and lived in Old Church Ullswater, dying in Ottawa Canada in 1919. The bridge at the head of the falls has a dedication to the memory of Stephen Edward Spring Rice, 1856 - 1902. The inscriptions says that Stephen would have liked his brother Gerald, who died 14 years after him and also gave his life for his country, to also be commemorated at this spot. |
