Considerably lengths of earthenware pipes (above) were found in position about two feet below ground. The pipes were used to provide fresh water to was fed by gravity from springs on the hillside. Changes in the direction of the flow were made my means of junction boxes (below), often through 90 degrees. The simple earthenware pipes were handmade and each was inscribed with the makers mark (so that they could be paid for their production). A better class of pipe was made using a wheel and they were probably made later to replace damaged pipes. Cistercian Abbey at Glenluce, Dumfries and Galloway.
